Voyeurism is a mental disorder classified as a paraphilia, a social phenomenon that is associated with deriving sexual pleasure from observing other individuals engaging in sexual activities. In popular terms, individuals suffering from this disorder are described as people who enjoy observing other individuals without the latter’s knowledge, no matter if the interest is awaken by sexual factors. This disorder is rather controversial as some see it as a sex crime others simply consider it a disorder like any other mental issues. Read on and find out much more interesting facts about this condition, its symptoms and the way in which it can be treated.

An exact cause of voyeurism is still unknown. Statistics show that in most cases the causes vary from patient to patient and scientist could not still find a common factor that would suit all or nearly all the sufferers. Some researchers claim that this mental disorder may be a result of an increased level of testosterone which may lead men to deviant sexual behavior. On the other hand, several studies have proved that strong risk factors include emotional abuse in childhood and/or family dysfunction.

The symptoms of voyeurism are difficult to notice in subjects as they are usually engaging in this type of behavior anonymously. However, specialists describe the most common symptom as experiencing sexual fantasies, sexual urges or simply getting pleasure from watching someone naked without his or her knowledge. These practices are considered symptoms of voyeurism if they are experienced over a period of half a year, recurrently. The symptoms of this mental disorder may cause the subject significant emotional distress and may even lead to its improper functioning in his/her social life.

Voyeurism is treatable and manageable as long as the patient actually seeks for help. Commonly, the treatment involves different types of therapies such as cognitive therapy, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis. Moreover, the patients are almost always prescribed medications that would inhibit their levels of sex hormones, in particular testosterone. Through cognitive therapy, the patient is thought on ways in which to suppress his/her behavior whereas behavioral therapy is aimed at teaching the patient how to control their impulse of watching people who have no idea they are being watched. Unfortunately, the voyeurism treatment may or may not work, depending on a very wide variety of factors. Nevertheless, the medication available only has the purpose to diminish the sexual desire but they do not necessarily provide an efficient treatment alternative for this condition.

From a legal point of view, voyeurism is a controversial disorder. According to common law, this practice is not a crime although in some countries it may be considered a sexual offense. But no matter its legal status, it is true that this condition will always be the cause of controversial debate as in many cultures it is seen as deviant and socially wrong.

Tourettes disorder or Tourettes syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes individuals to develop repetitive and stereotyped movements and vocalizations commonly referred to as tics. This condition was primarily described by the French doctor carrying the same name which diagnosed the disorder for the first time in 1885. Tourettes disorder is highly interfering with the sufferer’s life and that is why this condition has been intensively studied along the years. Read on and find out more interesting information on this subject, in particular regarding the symptoms, causes and treatment of the Tourettes disorder.

The specific causes of this ailment are still a mystery to the specialists. According to recent studies it appears that Tourettes disorder is inherited and moreover, there are believes that the condition is a result of an abnormality in certain areas of the brain, particularly in the frontal lobes and cortex. It seems that these abnormalities affect the circuits that link these areas and interfere with the communication between the nerve cells. Specialists have reached the consensus that the causes of Tourettes disorder are very complex and that is why they are so difficult to explain.

Tourettes symptoms mainly include the so called tics which consist of involuntary movements of a limited number of muscles. The tics are sudden and brief and they can be either simple or complex. Common Tourettes symptoms include eye blinking, shoulder shrugging or facial grimacing. Vocalizations may also occur as a result of this condition and they are usually simple such as repetitive throat-clearing or sniffing although more complex vocal tics may also be experienced in the form of words of phrases. Complex movement tics can be observed clearly as they involve the movement of more groups of muscles and are usually accompanied by simple or complex vocal tics. Very severe Tourettes symptoms include motor movements through which the patients may harm themselves such as punching in the face. Tourettes disorder is known in the pop culture due to coprolalia, one of the Tourettes symptoms that causes the patient to utter swear words. As with regard to the symptoms of this disorder, it is estimated that they are firstly noticeable when the patient is around 7 to 10 years old and they worsen by mid teenage. After this period they decrease in intensity and severity and continue through adulthood.

Tourettes treatment is available but unfortunately it cannot help the patients and it cannot cure the disease. Neuroleptics are the main medications used in the Tourettes treatment with the aim of suppressing the tics. Other medications used in the suppression of tics are clonidine and guanfacine.

To conclude, Tourettes disorder cannot be cured although patients can get help to cope with the Tourettes symptoms. Perhaps the technological development will provide these individuals with a better chance to improve their quality of life although we must wait for researchers to develop a better treatment alternative for such a dramatic condition like Tourettes disorder.

A sleep disorder is a highly disruptive condition that affects the life of an individual from many perspectives. People may be thinking that they suffer from a sleep disorder when they are simply unable to fall asleep. Yet, not everyone who thinks they have a sleep disorder actually has it. For instance, a temporary sleep problem may be the result of a stressful upcoming event or even a cold, and in these cases we cannot say that one is suffering from a sleep disorder. Read on and find out when you may be suffering from a sleep disorder and when should you address your symptoms to a specialist.

Common sleep disorders include insomnia, narcolepsy, sleep apnea and even snoring. Whereas some of these disorders are more severe and disruptive than others, they all interfere with the well functioning of the individual during the day. Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders as specialists estimate that nearly every individual will develop it at some point in their lives. Insomnia can be both chronic (on the long term) and acute (on the short term) condition. Insomnia is characterized by the individual’s inability to get good quality sleep and thus it interferes with his functioning during the day. Insomnia can be caused by a wide variety of factors including a stressful life, jetlag or poor sleeping habits. The good news is that insomnia is highly treatable no matter if it is chronic or acute. The only requirement to get the sleep that you need when suffering from insomnia is to consult a specialist that could guide you through the best treatment alternatives. In most cases, individuals who have developed insomnia will carry on self help techniques and cognitive behavioral therapy which will help them get a better sleep. Medicated treatment is also an option for insomnia sufferers but it should be considered as a last resort.

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder which is however not as common as insomnia. Narcolepsy is caused by a neurological problem consisting in the lack of the brain chemical that regulates sleep and which is known under the name of hypocretin. Narcolepsy causes severe symptoms in terms of making sufferers feel extremely sleepy. In serious cases narcolepsy may even cause individuals to instantly fall asleep. The main treatment used to provide patients with relief consists in a combination of therapy, behavioral treatments and medications.

A sleep disorder in general terms makes life very difficult for those who develop them. An individual needs about 8 hours of good quality sleep during the night and when they are unable to do so for a prolonged period of time, the repercussions on the quality of life of the sufferer are tremendous. Luckily, a sleep disorder is treatable in most cases with the help of a specialist and patients do not have to live with this burden.

While the term Schizophrenia is often used, there are few people that understand the true meaning of the word. Schizophrenia refers to a collection of mental disorders that can take a wide range of manifestations. Some forms of the condition are found when a person is delusional while other incarnations of Schizophrenia may include hallucinations or simply a thought process that doesn’t follow the dictates of logic. It is thought that the condition actually represents a change in the brain circuitry that is used to think logical thoughts. When these paths are altered, the person is not able to think in a normal way and their actions may also deviate from what is considered normal as a response.

One of the biggest problems with defining a distinct condition of Schizophrenia is that there are a number of possible causes for this condition. The most common cause of Schizophrenia is from hereditary genetics. Scientists have discovered that there are often duplications of certain strands of DNA in Schizophrenia patients. Also, there have been studies that are able to link Schizophrenia to the autism spectrum disorders that have a similar problem with following conventional logic. Another cause of Schizophrenia is from social or environmental sources. The majority of Schizophrenia cases occur in urban areas, leading experts to believe that there is something inherent in the urban lifestyle that contributes to the development of Schizophrenia. Examples of other social problems that could lead to Schizophrenia include childhood issues, substance abuse, and trauma.

Schizophrenia Symptoms often start appearing between the ages of 20 and 35. Although there are some common Schizophrenia Symptoms, most patients have an individual response to Schizophrenia. One of the more common of the Schizophrenia Symptoms is the presence of delusions. These delusions can take different forms, such as persecution, jealousy, and delusions of grandeur. Hallucinations are another of the Schizophrenia Symptoms that a person might experience. These hallucinations can be either visual or auditory. To combat Schizophrenia Symptoms, there are a number of treatment methods.

Although many people believe that Schizophrenia is not curable, many people have been able to overcome the condition by using proven Schizophrenia Treatment methods. The most common of these methods is cognitive therapy to address the Schizophrenia problems that the person is having. This therapy can use proof to show the patient the logical problems with their thought process in an order to correct it. Often, this form of Schizophrenia Treatment involves role-playing and deep self-examination. Medications are commonly used as a Schizophrenia Treatment as well to reduce the occurrence of psychotic episodes. Using these treatments, it is quite possible for a person to conquer Schizophrenia and return to a normal life.

Rett Syndrome is a condition that is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder and affects the specific grey matter found in the brain of a person. Retts, as the condition is often known, occurs to girls in the vast majority of cases and has a certain set of symptoms to identify the problem. Areas of the body, such as the head, hands, and feet grow at a lowered pace. These smaller sized features common to Rett Disorder have a few direct effects on the girl that is affected. By learning all of the necessary information about Rett Disorder, a patient and family can learn the best way to deal with the disorder.

Other than the smaller bodily features, there are a few other common signs among sufferers of the condition. Most of the girls will perform repetitive movements with their hands. This behavior of Retts can include putting hands in the mouth or continuously wringing the hands. Another characteristic common to girls with Rett Disorder is that they have problems with the gastrointestinal system. Epilepsy is found in approximately four out of five Retts patients. In addition to these complications, most patients will also display scoliosis, constipation, and will not be able to engage in verbal communication.

Research efforts have found the direct cause for Rett Syndrome. Retts occurs due to a mutation of the MECP2 gene in the vast majority of cases. However, a mutation in the FOXG1 or CDKL5 genes do account for the cause of 10% of Retts cases. Generally, these mutations are not inherited from the parents as most of the parents are otherwise healthy and do not have Retts. Rett Syndrome can also occur due to a germline mutation. One of the reasons that only girls have Retts is that the male fetuses that have the condition will often not survive to the delivery date. Male fetuses with the mutations do not have the natural ability to bind proteins. This function is essential to life and is why the fetuses with Retts do not make it to term.

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Rett Syndrome. However, scientists are researching ways to restore the proper function of the MECP2 gene for Rett Syndrome patients. If this action is found to be possible, it may also be possible to reverse the damage caused by Retts. Treatment of Rett Syndrome often requires constant supervision and making sure dietary intake is healthy to prevent sudden weight gain or loss. Also, certain medications are used to treat the various symptoms of Retts, such as epilepsy. Anti-psychotic medication and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are commonly used to prevent the patient from doing any harm to themselves or others. Because of the severe problems causes by Rett Syndrome, physical and speech therapy are usually needed to improve the patient’s ability to communicate.

Pica (PIE-kah) is a common eating disorder that involves the compulsive eating of objects or foods in non-nutritional quantities. It is most common among young children, children with developmental or mental disorders, pregnant women, and people dealing with some gastrointestinal infections. Pica is marked by the compulsive consumption of non-nutritive substances such as clay, metal, dirt, paper, coal, soap or gum, or by the consumption of largely non-nutritional foods in mass quantities, like flour, salt, ice cubes, or raw starches. In order to diagnose pica as an eating disorder, the patient must have exhibited symptoms consistently for at least one month and must be old enough to rule out the possibility of developmental immaturity, meaning that children who eat odd substances may have just not learned the proper behavior yet and don’t have pica.

The research surrounding pica is limited, but this eating disorder is believed to be caused largely by a mineral or nutrient deficiency, most commonly iron. Pica is very common among pregnant women who develop anemia (an iron deficiency) and among patients who have just undergone surgery, as the loss of blood causes lower iron levels. Pica is also common in patients with other nutrient deficiencies, such as people with celiac disease and people hosting hookworms or roundworms who may be consuming most of their nutrients, resulting in pica as a sort of nutritional coping mechanism. Pica has also been identified as a possible coping mechanism of the mental variety in people suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, or even severe stress.

Pica is an eating disorder that has the potential to cause serious damage in a short period of time. An eating disorder that is commonly known, such as bulimia or anorexia, is likely to cause serious harm over a period of time. Pica, on the other hand, can kill a child instantly if they ingest something destructive to their gastrointestinal tract, like a sharp blade ingested by a child with metal-eating tendencies. This could cause life-threatening internal bleeding. People with pica very commonly suffer from severe digestive problems that often result in serious and dangerous constipation.

Pica treatment is still being studied and no one solution for pica has been discovered. In people suffering from pica as a result of mental or developmental disorders, the use of SSRIs (generally a type of anti-depressant) has been largely successful. Another pica treatment is to solve the potential nutrient deficiency, demonstrated by women who suffer while pregnant and whose symptoms subside after giving birth, or by someone releasing a hookworm or roundworm and suddenly returning to healthy eating habits. The most common and most successful pica treatment is behavioral therapy, typically demonstrated in children as learning negative associations with eating things that aren’t food and positive associations with healthy eating habits. In order to treat this common but mind-boggling disorder, each patient has to be individually assessed for his or her needs and possible causes.

Learning disorders are more common than you may think and they are typically found early, as they are exhibited in children. Learning disabilities in children affect the way they receive and process information, as well as the way they communicate information to others. Children with learning disabilities are by no means less intelligent than other children, but rather they hear, see and understand their world differently than others. In fact, many exceptionally gifted children are misdiagnosed with learning disorders because essentially they learn differently, too. Luckily, the brain comes equipped with neuroplasticity, especially in children. Neuroplasticity describes the ability to create new brain cells and adapt to new ways of learning. If you have children with learning disorders, remember that your influence on their confidence levels is huge. Approach them and their learning with realism and optimism, as well as unconditional support.

Some learning disorders affect the way information physically reaches the child or the output the child can put forth. These are auditory and visual processing disorders and sensory integration disorders. Auditory processing disorder causes a difficulty in hearing the difference between sounds and often affects children’s reading abilities even when reading to themselves because the words are still “heard” in their heads. Visual processing disorder causes kids to struggle with maps, charts, displays, diagrams, and other visual means of expressing information. Sensory integration disorder, also known as dyspraxia, affects both fine and gross motor skills. Kids with dyspraxia can have trouble with anything involving hand-eye coordination or body movements, like zipping up a jacket or jumping rope. Of all learning disabilities, dyspraxia is typically able to be diagnosed the earliest as motor skills are crucial to very young development.

Other learning disabilities affect particular subjects of learning and often the affected children excel in other subjects. Dyscalculia describes the inability to process numerical information, including difficulty telling or understanding time. Dysgraphia describes the difficulty that comes with writing, both physically writing (handwriting difficulties) and mentally writing (organizing ideas). Dyslexia, perhaps the most common of learning disorders, involves difficulty reading due to decreased comprehension of words and phrases. Dyslexic children often describe the words they see as looking “mixed up.” Children with these sorts of learning disorders are often given Individual Education Plans in school to help them learn the subjects with which they struggle in a different way than their peers.

Learning difficulties also include emotional trouble in children, although they should be properly diagnosed as an emotional processing disorder is not the same as an emotional reactivity disorder like bipolar disorder or depression. Children with emotional learning disabilities exhibit these characteristics at a very young age, as they have trouble turning life experiences into learned emotions. Other conditions often misdiagnosed as learning disabilities include ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. While these are not technically classified as learning disorders, they certainly affect the way children process information.

A lot of people in the world suffer from Depression, an unfortunate condition that can severely reduce the quality of the sufferer’s life and cause problems in their personal lives, careers, and families. In many of these cases, both Depression And Anxiety will coexist together, worsening the problem and causing even more difficulties for the Depression sufferer. Fortunately, however, it is possible to treat Depression quickly. The first step, however, is recognizing the Depression Symptoms. The sooner these symptoms of Depression are recognized, the sooner the person can seek help for the Depression and any coexisting conditions as well.

Depression symptoms to watch out for, especially in those who are at a high risk for developing Depression, include trouble concentrating, poor me amory, an inability to make even the smallest of decisions, feeling guilty or shameful without reason, persistent negative thoughts and feelings, poor self esteem, troubles sleeping or sleeping too much and the development of various sleeping disorders, becoming easily irritated, not having any interest in hobbies or activities that the sufferer formerly enjoyed, a lack of interest in sex, changes in appetite, feeling empty, sad feelings, and, if left untreated, suicidal thoughts or attempts. People who are going through a difficult change in their lives, such as a divorce or the loss of a job, and those who have family members affected by Depression may be at a higher risk for these symptoms of Depression and should watch themselves closely for them.

There are also symptoms that indicate that Depression and Anxiety are both being experienced at the same time. If a person has some of the above Depression Symptoms in addition to constant feelings of dread, feeling tense for no reason, worrying excessively often about things that are not likely to happen, sweating, stomach pain, and unexplained nervousness, the person may be suffering from related anxiety problems as well as from Depression.

Noticing these Depression Symptoms early on is the absolute best thing a person can do, because getting help for the Depression Symptoms means getting help for the Depression itself. There are many different types of treatment that the patient may use to end the Depression. In many cases, an anti depressant may be prescribed, though other types of medication may be used, especially if there is another coexistent mental disorder. Some Depression sufferers, however, may not have a chemical imbalance and may simply need to talk with a psychologist, therapist, or other mental health professional. In most cases, though, it will take some combination of medication and therapy to effectively treat the Depression for good. The sooner people seek help for their Depression, however, the sooner they can experience relief of their symptoms and be on their way to living a healthier, happier, Depression free life.

Bipolar Disorder is a very serious mental condition that, if left untreated, can have serious negative consequences on the sufferer’s life. Some untreated Bipolar people will go on to hurt themselves or others or to ruin aspects of their lives such as their jobs or relationships. Most commonly, the patient will experience high busy periods, in which the patient has trouble concentrating or sitting still and experiences a seriously elevated mood, known as mania. The periods of mania are often followed by depression. Most patients will go several months between episodes, though some may experience rapid cycling. There are also lots of sub types of this condition. The most important thing, then, for a person to do is to know the Bipolar Symptoms and to be on the look out for them so that prompt medical care can be sought if necessary. This is especially important for those who have a family or personal history of Bipolar Disorder.

It is important to note that people of all ages, including children, can suffer from Bipolar Disorder. Therefore, all people should be observed for various Bipolar Symptoms. Some signs that may indicate the person is Bipolar and in the manic phase of Bipolar cycling include feeling happy, talkative, or social; increased irritability; constant movement; the desire to try new activities or take on more work; getting distracted or sidetracked easily; speaking quickly, often with no logical train of thought; getting less sleep, often on purpose; an increase in confidence or ego; and engaging in impulsive behaviors which are often dangerous. On the other side of the spectrum, a Bipolar person who is experiencing depression will often have the following Bipolar Symptoms: anxiety, a feeling of emptiness and loneliness, a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, a lower sex drive, increased fatigue, difficulty concentrating, an inability to make decisions, changes in appetite and eating habits, the development of sleeping problems, suicidal thoughts, and self injury.

Fortunately, there is help for those who suffer from Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar people of all ages should know that they are not alone. The most important thing is, of course, to first notice the signs of being Bipolar and then to speak with a doctor or a psychologist. These practitioners can diagnose the Bipolar condition, since mental disorders can often mimic one another. If the person is, indeed, Bipolar, then a course of treatment can be pursued. Treatment for Bipolar Disorder is often different for everyone and it can take a while to fully treat the Bipolar person.

Most Bipolar people will benefit from some combination of medication and psychotherapy. Psychotherapy allows the Bipolar patient to work through the issue. Most Bipolar people will either be prescribed a mood stabilizer, atypical antipsychotic medication, or an antidepressant. A Bipolar person mayalso take some combination of these. Whatever the necessary treatment for a particular person’s Bipolar condition, seeking treatment and pursuing it through till the end is the only way to find relief from the Bipolar condition.

A common diagnosis found in children but also in adults is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This condition is considered a developmental disorder and, while it is most common in children, it can affect people of all ages and from all walks of life. In fact, many people live with the symptoms of the condition for years before they ever seek help. The best way for people to protect themselves and their loved ones from living with the condition untreated is to know the most common Attention Deficit Symptoms and to be on the lookout for them. If they appear to be present, people should visit with a doctor or counselor to receive a proper diagnosis. It is also important to note that there is no one cause as to why the condition comes about, though there are many theories. Some people feel it may be genetic, while others think it could result from poor parenting or abusive situations. It may also be merely a chemical issue in the brain.

The most common Attention Deficit Symptoms include becoming distracted easily, being forgetful, an inability to focus on only one activity for a long period of time, switching activities rapidly, difficulty in learning new subjects or ideas, organizational problems, losing items, being a poor listener, daydreaming often, slow movements, an inability to follow instructions, fidgeting, excessive talking, running for no reason, the need to touch several items, moving constantly, a dislike for quiet activities, impatience, uncontrollable emotions, impulsive actions, and trouble with normal waiting periods, such as waiting in line at a store. All of these symptoms do not have to be present for a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, so even those people who struggle with just a few of these symptoms should seek help.

When a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is reached, the patient will be able to explore several different options for treatment of the Hyperactivity Disorder. These treatments include the use of stimulant medications, the use of anti psychotic medications, and counseling. Often times, doctors will recommend both counseling and one specific drug treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Some Attention Deficit people will also find that they benefit from changes in their diet, such as avoiding stimulants like caffeine and excess sugar, or from getting more exercise and striving to live a healthier lifestyle. Usually, however, Attention Deficit people will still require some kind of medication to fully treat their condition.

If left untreated, Attention Deficit disorder can lead to serious problems with life goals, careers, social interactions, relationships, and in other important areas of the person’s life. To avoid having this happen, Attention Deficit issues should be treated as soon as possible. The only way to seek treatment early is to be on constant guard for the signs and symptoms and to get them checked out as soon as they appear.
